It does for sure represent a basic truth that can be applied to any number of situations, including the one you speak of.

I have seen the opposite meaning regarding the parable.

And....that the older is the gentiles, and the younger...yet to come back...is the children of Israel.

The gentiles are older....going back to Adam.
The children of Israel are younger....only going back to Jacob/Israel.
